Steel Phase Analysis

Material Overview
Steel phase analysis is vital for assessing the quality of steel, determining its grade, and predicting material properties such as mechanical, thermal, and corrosion resistance.

Challenges
Automating phase analysis in steel is challenging due to the presence of complex mixtures of phases like ferrite, pearlite, bainite, and martensite, which require high-resolution imaging for accurate differentiation. The overlapping and complex interfaces of these phases add difficulty in their accurate delineation and quantification. Variations in chemical composition, carbon content, and effects of heat treatment on phase distribution further complicate the consistency of automated analysis. Additionally, the quality of sample preparation, including polishing and etching, plays a critical role in the reliability of phase analysis in steel.

MIPAR Solution
By combining robust Deep Learning models with conventional image analysis approaches, MIPAR quickly and accurately detects steel phases, even in the presence of inclusions or defects. Once detected, phases can be automatically measured using classic area fraction or area measurements or following a custom definition. By detecting each phase, MIPAR enables size and orientation characterization, providing valuable insights into steel material properties, including tensile strength, heat resistance, and crystal structure.

Technical Details
MIPAR supports over 150 file types from a wide range of instrument types and manufacturers, including automated calibration and metadata import. Micrographs can be processed in batches, and MIPAR includes a batch review environment to ensure detection and measurement accuracy. The software runs locally on your workstation, without the need for an internet connection, eliminating security concerns.
