Grain size analysis in copper is vital for assessing material quality, material composition, and predicting material properties such as mechanical, thermal, and corrosion properties.

Challenges
Grain size analysis in copper is challenging due to its high degree of homogeneity and evenness in grain structure, which complicates the identification of individual grains. Oxidation and corrosion can alter surface characteristics, affecting micrograph clarity, while the clarity of grain boundaries, especially in high-purity copper, is often less distinct. The presence of various microstructural features like twins and inclusions adds further complexity to the analysis. Additionally, the variability in sample preparation and the anisotropy in grain shapes in some alloys pose significant challenges for reliable automated grain size analysis.

By combining robust Deep Learning models with conventional image analysis approaches, MIPAR quickly and accurately detects individual copper grains, even in the presence of heavy twinning. Once detected, grain size can be automatically measured using classic diameter and area measurements or following the ASTM E112 standard. By detecting individual grains, MIPAR enables size, shape, and orientation characterization, providing valuable insights into copper material properties, including average grain size.
